5 Day Detox Challenge – The Results

Jon’s 5 day detox ended on Friday. He weighed, 94.9kg. That’s a loss of 1.5kgs in just 5 days. He also lost 1/2 inch from his waist. Jon was amazed at the mental clarity and focus he had by the end of the week. He felt more productive ans efficient when working.

Jon has now committed to eating and drinking this way on weekdays and allowing himself to have a treat at weekends. He found drinking 3 litres of doc brocs a day surprisingly easy and the food was really tasty and enjoyable.

Alkaline Detox – Day 1 Weigh in

I challenged Fiance Jon to a 5 day alkaline/vegan detox while he’s off work this week.

I’ve weighed and measured him today and will do it again after 5 days.

Weight: 96.4kg

Body Fat: 23.7%

Visceral Fat (Fat around waist line): 14

Water Content: 58.8%

Muscle mass: 38.8%

I measured the widest part of his waist and he was surprised to hear it is 42.5 inches.

5 Day Alkaline Detox Challenge

I’ve been alkalising for about 3 years now and it all began with a detox which left me feeling amazing! I became hooked and didn’t want to go back to feeling, tired, bloated and sluggish!

I now live with my Fiance Jon, who will eat pretty much anything and has embraced vegan food and green smoothies! He does however manage to consume the odd sausage and bacon bap and drinks alcohol most days. He is now training for a Triathlon and needs to significantly improve his fitness. He realises that alcohol affects his performance and his intake needs to be massively reduced or cut out completely! He is also keen to shift a few pounds and his weight tends to stay pretty constant.

Therefore, I have challenged him to a 5 day detox, making it realistic and avoiding the weekends social activities. To do a successful detox timing and preparation is key!

The Rules:

  • NO MEAT

Detox Preparation:

  • Its all about timing: We have cleared a week in our diaries where we have no social functions, no meals out and plenty of time to prepare and cook food. Jon has a week off work and we are staying at home so it’s perfect.
  • Support: We are doing this together which, I feel is vital for success. I still follow the detox rules most of the time, however, have been letting wheat, especially bread sneak back in.
  • Writing a menu plan: My next job is to write a 5 day menu, use this to create a shopping list, then do the food shop. This makes life much easier, I know what to cook, the ingredients are there so there’s no excuse to slip ! I will adapt recipes from Carol Vorderman’s Detox recipe book. The recipes are not strictly alkaline, however have cut out the most acidic foods. The recipes are simple, easy to follow and still make me feel great. I will boost our alkalinity with supplements.
  • Supplements: I have my supplements ready, I usually consume at least 1 litre of Doc Brocs Power plants a day and will boost this back up to 3 litres and add pHion’s pH Booster. This is the bit that most of us struggle with as we are use to being dehydrated! 3 litres seems like a lot, you soon get use to it and the best way to flush acidic toxins out the body is with water. We will also be taking Dr Young’s Montmorillonite Clay, it’s great for cleansing the gut and is packed full of alkaline minerals. It tends to stay lumpy in water so it will be added to our daily green smoothie.
  • Water Bottle: we a have 1 litre water  bottle each so we can ensure we are drinking our 3 litres a day.
  • Starting point: We will weigh Jon, measure his body fat %, muscle %, water % and waist line so he can see the difference after 5 days.

The Secret to Long Term Weight Loss

There has been a relatively new discovery in science about how our body works. It is all to do with something called ACID!

As we all know from school acid burns and if we swallow it we could die! What we didn’t learn was that some of our foods are acidic and yes, they can kill us! Just a little more slowly.

When we eat acidic foods, such as; Meat, dairy, pastas, bread, sugar, and alcohol they burn our insides as the blood becomes acidic.

It takes 4 parts alkaline to neutralise 1 part acid. Therefore, alkaline foods need to be eaten in much larger quantities than acidic foods. When eating a meal cover ¾ of your plate in alkaline foods like green vegetables and only ¼ in carbohydrates or protein.

Our body is made up of 70% water which is neutral (neither acidic nor alkaline). Drinking plenty of water creates the right environment inside our body and helps us flush out all the acids and toxins. Drink at least 2-3 litres of water a day and drink it constantly during the day, if you wait until you are thirsty your body is already dehydrated.

Over exercising (until you feel the burn!) causes a build up of lactic ACID. If you’re one of those people exercising like crazy to loose weight and it’s still not coming off its because of the acid. Exercise is great for weight loss if you do not over do it and replace your fluids.

I don’t think it is any coincidence that the earths surface is 70% water, 30% matter  and our bodies are made the same; 70% water 30% matter, therefore, it makes sense to eat in this same ratio, covering the plate with 70% watery foods such as green leafy vegetables and the other 30% of the plate covered in ‘matter’, beans, pulses, grains, nuts, seeds.

This way of eating is recomended in the book, ‘The pH Miracle’  a great read! It is healthier for the body and healthier for the planet!

Alkalising Explained Simply

Below is a simple explanation of how maintaining correct alkaline pH is vital for optimum health and being over acidic is the route of all disease. The text below has been borrowed from a health forum

Dr. Robert O. Young’s New Biology, most simply stated, is that the over-acidification of the body is the single underlying cause of all disease. In contrast, the old biology, based on the work of Louis Pasteur in the late 1800s, stems from the idea that disease comes from germs which invade the body from the outside. Dr. Young has found that when the body is in healthy alkaline balance, germs are unable to get a foothold.

Think of your body as a fish tank. Think of the importance of maintaining the integrity of the internal fluids of the body that we “swim” in daily. Imagine the fish in this tank are your cells and organ systems bathed in fluids, which transport food and remove wastes.

Now imagine we back up a car and put the tailpipe up against the air intake filter that supplies the oxygen for the water in the tank. The water becomes filled with carbon monoxide, lowering the alkaline pH, creating an acidic pH environment, and threatening the health of the “fish,” your cells and organs.

What if we throw in too much food or the wrong kind of food (acid-producing food like dairy, sugar, and animal protein) and the fish are unable to consume or digest it all, and it starts to decompose and putrefy? Toxic acid waste and chemicals build up as the food breaks down, creating more acidic byproducts, altering the optimum alkaline pH.

Basically, this is a small example of what we may be doing to our internal fluids every day. We are fouling them with pollution, smoking, drugs, excessive intake of food, over-consumption of acid-forming foods, and any number of transgressions which compromise the delicate balance of our internal alkaline fluids.

Some of us have fish tanks (bodies) that are barely able to support life, yet we somehow manage to struggle from day to day, building more severe imbalances until there is the inevitable crash and debilitating chronic, disturbing and disorganizing symptoms to deal with.

The pH level (the acid-alkaline measurement) of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. Extended acid imbalances of any kind are not well tolerated by the body. Indeed, the entire metabolic process depends on a balanced internal alkaline environment. A chronically over-acidic pH corrodes body tissue, slowly eating into the 60,000 miles of veins and arteries like acid eating into marble. If left unchecked, it will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. In summary, over-acidification interferes with life itself leading to all sickness and disease!

How do you know if you’re overly acidic?

Fat is an Acid Problem!

Perhaps one of Dr. Young’s most well known discoveries is his theory of the cause of overweight. He has shown that fat is actually an over-acidification problem. What does that mean? The body creates fat cells to carry acids away from your vital organs, so these acids literally don’t choke your organs to death. Fat is saving your life! Fat is actually a response from the body to an alarming over-acidic condition.

What about Underweight?

At the other end of the health spectrum, the yeast and fungus produced within an overly acidic body can feed on your nutrients and reduce the chemical and mechanical absorption of everything you eat by as much as 50%. This causes many people to become excessively thin, which is no healthier than becoming overweight. Without protein, your body cannot rebuild new tissues or produce enzymes, hormones, or hundreds of other chemical components necessary for cell energy and organ activity. Fatigue, illness, and body weight changes are the results. An underweight person may loose a little more weight as their body chemistry stabilizes. As their body normalizes, they will begin to gain towards their ideal weight.

Healthy bodies are not overweight or underweight. A healthy body naturally maintains its own ideal weight. As alkalizing and oxygenation begins to take place, the body naturally begins to seek its own ideal weight.

Allergies

The toxins produced within an overly acidic, oxygen deprived body may contribute significantly to what are often called the symptoms of allergy. In addition, the absorption of undigested proteins is a major cause of allergy conditions. The digestive system is weakened, which prevents the total breakdown of amino acids – often causing food allergies. This alone may produce a wide spectrum of severe allergic reactions.

Fatigue

Fatigue is probably the major symptom or complaint of an overly acidic body. The toxins produced in an acidic body environment reduce the absorption of protein and minerals, which in turn weakens the body’s ability to produce enzymes and hormones. This also interferes with the reconstruction of cells and other necessary components of energy production. The result is fatigue, poor endurance, an inability to add muscle tone, and general weakness.

Alkaline Water

The most important thing you must learn is to hydrate the body with alkalizing water. Like the earth on which we live, our bodies are 70% water. Food cravings are often the body’s cry for water. A thirst for water will begin as one begins to hydrate with water.

A diet high in acid foods such as meat, dairy, grains, high sugar fruits and bread, causes acid wastes to build up in the body. When acid wastes enter our blood stream, the blood system will attempt to dispose of these wastes in liquid form through the lungs or the kidneys. If there are too many wastes to handle, they are deposited in various organ systems like the heart, pancreas, liver, colon, and other locations.

The breakdown of this disposal process of acid waste could also be called “the aging process”. To slow down and reverse this process, one must begin by removing this over-acidification of the blood and tissues by including liberal amounts of alkaline water in the diet.
