For years I was lead to believe salt was an enemy. It was ingrained, ‘Don’t put salt on your food, it gives you high blood pressure’ I even convinced my parents it was bad and we no longer had it on the dinner table.
I now know that salt is actually good for us! Salt good?! If you’ve ever seen someone on a drip in hospital, have you noticed whats in the drip? Sodium Chloride or Salt. So the doctors tell us not to eat it, then they put it straight into our blood to make us better. Crazy!
I now know that our blood is mainly salt water with blood cells floating around in it. The salt helps us conduct signals around our body, like electricity; it keeps our heart beating and our brain functioning.
So why does salt have bad press? Our western diets have become very acidic and contain large quantities of meat and dairy. Meat is very slow to move through our digestive system and is highly acidic. Salts are alkaline (the opposite of acid) and can cause congestion when eaten with meat. Therefore the medics have blamed the salt when its actually the meat that is to blame!
The best salts are sea salt or rock salts which contain a large amount of minerals, table salts are processed which strips them of minerals.
